Just like last year, I’ll be taking a break over the summer, so this is a shorter issue than would normally drop into your inbox. I hope that you enjoy this selection of links and pics, feel free to get in touch.
We’re back in Pittsburgh after a longish flight and it was lovely to see our family and friends back in the UK, now there is work to be done and it is time to write and make. My brain is buzzing and I’ve already made the mistake of thinking everyone is in the same head-space as I am, and sent emails without pausing to remember that folks are still traveling and busy throughout the summer. I apologize if you’re one of those people, it’s okay, all in good time.
I’m gearing up for a busy semester, three courses, traveling, new projects, and writing assignments. Also quite a few family commitments with sports and community activities. It’s all good. I’m reminding myself too that I’m heading towards a notable birthday towards the end of the year, but I won’t think too much about that for now.
We were all sad to say goodbye to family and already looking forward to seeing them again. Hopefully, we’ll get some visits maybe next year, who knows. We did some fun stuff during our visit and I’m looking through photos of fabulous weather and lots of color and light.
How are you? How is your summer going? Let me know in the comments or shoot me an email (I know this is your preferred method of communication).
Here are a few things I’ve read or watched.
Adults make the same sounds to babies in all cultures, we all speak parentese.
I thought these Art for Introvert courses looked really good, there are a few of them that I might look at for the Fall. Do I have time to do another course?
There’s still time to travel in the next few weeks, I’ve started exploring ideas using RoadTripper which finds places of interest along your chosen route, great idea. I could use a cycling version.
Learn Anything is pretty wild, you can put much put in any search term and resources will appear. Great for coding etc, obvs.
The boys show me these good deeds videos all the time, but I don’t like them for all the reasons in this article. It is a completely dehumanizing trend.
I really liked this post by Mirya Holman about welcoming new colleagues and feel blessed that so many of the faculty did these things when I arrived at CMU.
Also from Marcus Bösch’s brilliant newsletter I saw the conspiracy theory chart with a link to a great explanation about what the right call cultural Marxism.
Instagram has temporarily walked back some of its changes, but only I suspect until the fuss dies down, and then they’ll implement them again.
Good luck to the women’s England Team in their Euro 2022 Final against Germany. Lots of chatter back home about this “Not her problem” ad which firmly places the responsibility for sexism on men. Warning, it has some juicy injury footage, don’t watch if you don’t like that kind of thing.
Thank You
Okay, still recovering from jet lag but looking forward to a bike ride just as soon as some of these rain storms clear. I hope that you’re well and working on some new things too.
