I’m getting over the disappointment of penalties, fair play to Italy who really showed themselves to be the best team in the Euro’s *sigh. Soul searching has begun in earnest. As an antidote to the suffering I watched Ted Lasso, a show with a big heart and boundless positivity.
Enjoyed more time on the bike and a midweek visit to the Warhol Museum and lunch with a dear friend who is leaving for an exciting new job. Despedida.
Zaila Avant-garde, becomes the New National Spelling Bee Champ. This is a great story, and so much more to come.
Along the way to reading that I came across this remarkable story of how Phil Collins (he used to live up the road from me and I served him when I worked in the local supermarket) became obsessed with The Alamo and spent millions of dollars on artifacts of questionable provenance.
We share our neighbourhood with trees, they are home to birds and squirrels and provide shade, many of these trees are older than the houses built around them. I never realised that trees are a poverty issue.
What we can all learn from England Manager Gareth Southgate. I’m proud of the England team, I wanted them to win for themselves, not for the worst of their supporters, this was a team that represents the diversity, that feels something good and bitter sweet of being British. Maybe it’s not the end, but just the beginning.
Last bit of sport (promise I have been doing other things). Marc Cavendish equals the great Eddie Mercx record of 34 stage wins. I’ve been listening to the ITV Cycling podcast which is fun, messy and irreverent, and Cav’s interviews are usually quite fun, and he will sprint in Paris, but only if he survives the mountains, he said he would give us a good bundle of wins in exchange for not suffering as he did in Andorra.
btw - if you’re looking for a new podcast app, then I can’t recommend Overcast.fm enough, I’ve been using it for years, probably the best that you can do on iPhone or desktop, there are a host of settings, for speed, number of episodes to keep (really helps with storage space on your phone), winding and rewinding is perfect.
Apple pencil now supports more languages, it will recognize your writing in Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, German, and French and turn it into type or find it in search.
One of the biggest cultural differences I’ve entered has been with attitudes to work, perhaps I’ll talk more about this when I’m back to regular newsletters but this article on the four-day week by Anne Helen Peterson got me thinking how it would go down in the States, my belief is that healthy, happy workers are productive, creative and dedicated, but I’m constantly arguing this with friends who hardly ever take time off work and squeeze just a few vacation days around public holidays.
Do you ever want to convert playlists from one music streaming service to another, say spotify to apple music? Use Tune My Music it is so simple - here’s a quick walkthrough.
Sort of found this chilling, I’m only starting to understand this concept of “main character”. I prefer the Pavement version “..chosen as an extra in the movie adaptation to the sequel of your life..” also, quick plug - if you’re a big fan (what? no takers?) never mind, I was only going to tell you there’s a great song-by-song podcast called Meeting Malkmus.
That’s it, have a lovely weekend.
