Hello,
I hope that you’re well, it’s lovely to welcome new readers this week who joined our little community.
I’m still on a summer hiatus, (although meetings are starting to ramp up already) and I will be writing a full newsletter when I return to regular hours in August, but until then here’s a short update and a few things that caught my eye this week.
We had an incredible evening at our first baseball game, watching the Pirates v Mets. Although we’ve been wanting to see a game, the real reason we made the trip was to hear our youngest play out the National Anthem with his school band. He’s been learning trombone for about a year, he was nervous, but absolutely nailed it! The game itself turned out to be a belter! Pirates were down 6 nothing in the 8th and came back with a grand-slam home run walk-off - the first time since 2004! If you think I sound like I know what I’m talking about, then you’re easily fooled. It was great fun, we rounded out the evening with fireworks, the view from the stands was spectacular with the city and the ballpark, what an evening!
Match report from the Pirates 9-6 win over the Mets!

Modern Thrive is a fascinating read about design work, freelancing, and creativity. There are some tough weeks, how to cope when the money runs out and how to handle the anxieties of starting your own business.
This week has been all about the Women’s Olympic skateboarders, they are incredible.
A friend of mine sent me this article from the WSJ reviewing “Hyper Education” by Pawan Dhingra, about the rise in the millions of dollars of supplemental learning that parents are investing in for their kids. A good read, even if the WSJ is slightly suspicious of an author who used the term “Neoliberalism” too often for their liking…
Mask Mandates are back, which is sensible and follows the science, and although unvaccinated people are at the highest risk of infection and hospitalization, people who have had two jabs can still carry the virus, including the more infectious delta-variant, and infect others. Again front-line and essential workers will be at high risk.
I started reading articles in the Calvert Journal (and couldn’t stop). This fascinating project explores culture, innovation, photography, and travel in the New East: Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Russia, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.
Time to show support and solidarity with Simon Biles as she withdraws from a series of events at the Olympics citing mental health concerns.
This looks fun.
I’m reading the novelization of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” (affiliate link). I will give you a review later, but just love the airport carousel design of the book, including the pages with slightly skeud text to make it seem cheaply printed in a pulp fiction style.
That’s all I got for you, go and enjoy the summer. See you next week.
